Nathan Lane is back and T.R. Knight starts in It’s Only a Play on March 31, taking over from Martin Short as James Wicker and Maulik Pancholy as Frank Finger, respectively. Both Lane and Knight will remain with the Terrence McNally comedy until it ends its engagement on June 7 at Broadway's Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
A Tony winner for The Producers and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Lane also received Tony nominations for Guys and Dolls and The Nance. He left It's Only a Play for a prior commitment, The Iceman Cometh at BAM, which is rumored to be eyeing Broadway.
Knight was last seen on the Great White Way opposite Sir Patrick Stewart in A Life in the Theatre. Other stage credits include Parade. He is best known for his role as George O’Malley for four seasons on Grey’s Anatomy, for which he received an Emmy nod for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Additional screen credits include 42 and Charlie Lawrence (opposite Lane).
It's Only a Play, directed by Jack O’Brien, is set on the opening night of Peter Austin's new play as he anxiously awaits to see if his show is a hit. With his career on the line, he shares his big first night with his best friend, a television star, his fledgling producer, his erratic leading lady, his wunderkind director, an infamous drama critic and a wide-eyed coat check attendant on his first night in Manhattan.
The production also currently stars Matthew Broderick, F. Murray Abraham, Stockard Channing, Katie Finneran and Micah Stock.
